Don Pasquale, the opera buffa was first adapted into Chinese as The Marriage of Don Pasquale (帕老爷的婚事) during its 1990 premiere at the Beijing Capital Opera Training School. The localized title was chosen to instantly convey the plot’s essence to Chinese audiences.

In 2012 and 2023, Zheng Xiaoying Opera Center revived this beloved Chinese version, staging it in Xiamen, Fuzhou (concert version), and Quanzhou. With its relatable dialogue, uproarious plot twists, and full Mandarin libretto delivered by a opera singer, the production had audiences roaring with laughter, proving that opera’s comedic brilliance transcends language barriers.
