Rigoletto, a seminal masterpiece by the great Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, is adapted from Victor Hugo’s play Le Roi s'amuse (The King’s Amusement). Premiering in 1851, the opera faced immediate censorship by French authorities during its 1832 debut performance of Hugo’s original play, which was banned for its perceived satire of the monarchy.
